Wall Street Journal is known for printing news paper full of financial news on front page. But recently I have observed it publishing more gossip stories than news about finance, quarterly results of various companies, economic situation of United States and World and other business related news.
If you see news paper edition of 02/25/2009 you will see a love story of Chander Mohan aka Chand Mohammad (former deputy Chief Minister (equivalent to the position of Governor in US) of Haryana ) right on the front page.
With the advent of internet, blogs, twitter, online video news channel etc. news paper industry is losing money and we see more and more people reading news on internet rather than the traditional source such as news paper. To increase sales, news paper like WSJ is employing good old technique of publishing gossip story on front page. Sex always sells and WSJ adopting that “dirty” strategy to sell more news paper seems very low.

Well can someone please explain me why in the world WSJ will publish a love story of Deputy Chief Minister of one of the state of India on front page? Do they have no contents to publish on front page? Is it some kind of political move by WSJ (they did print a story about Vikram Pandit (CEO of Citigroup) to defile reputation of some executives? Do WSJ ever print Britney Spears or Paris Hilton Story on front page? Is it an attempt to attack of secular democracy in India?
It would be more pleasing and interesting to see financial and business news on front page by news paper like WSJ. If they want to publish such story it will be more apt if they put it somewhere in the inside pages and precisely in gossip section.

Techmeme is one of my favorite technology news site and I like it’s aggregation algorithm which displays much talked about (technology) news item and from the “best” sources. But displaying walled garden news item on front page is not something I am used to see.
Till date I have hardly observed any paid content links (apart from sponsored links) there but today I have observed a link to Wall Street Online
 |
As shown here the link to Motorolla to Sell Email Unit lands on WSJ online and reader can only read excerpt and not the whole story. To read the whole story reader has to subscribe. I was under the impression that Techmeme is a news source where users get the latest tech news (it auto updates the page in 5 minutes approximately) and it does not show walled garden links. Users visit techmeme to read news item and love the free press (mostly blogs) which is readable by any user and anywhere without any kind of subscription model. |
I am not sure whether there is any partnership between WSJ and Techmeme to bring the WSJ links on front page and increase the WSJ’s online user base. Techmeme gets plenty of sponsored links and if WSJ online is also one of the their sponsor meme then it should be displayed as well.
In this economy this should be the last mode of revenue for any online applications – “pay per user” through news aggregator. I can’t imagine – 1) Google will start charging for every 11th search in 24 hours. 2) Yahoo charging for read emails. 3) Facebook charging to upload photos (well this can come up anytime soon)

Today Mr. President has signed $787 Billion (a much debated, talked about) stimulus plan i.e. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is in effect from today.
As a part of this initiative an unprecedented move has been made by Mr. President to make this process of recovery transparent to everyone who has access to web. Recovery.gov is live from today and it has very neat and clean interface.

The details of the bill can be read from here.
This bill includes spending money in almost every sector and it is shown on the home page

The allocation of fund in other form as shown below

I liked the milestone part the most which is shown on the home page of Recovery.gov – all major dates when a particular action will be taken/occur is plotted on a draggable calendar

As Mr. President has said today, this plan is the “Beginning of an End” and we can’t expect it to change the situation instantly, it will take time to solve problems( housing problem, financial market to solve credit crisis, creating jobs, innovations in science and technology). The purpose of this site is to show where and how the government is spending Tax payer’s money.
